Everyday wear

Your jewellery is made to be worn, but a few habits will keep it looking new for years:

• Last on, first off. Put jewellery on after perfume, lotion and hairspray have dried, and take it off before bed.
• Keep it dry. Remove pieces before showering, swimming, washing dishes or working out. Chlorine and salt water are the fastest ways to dull a finish.
• Store separately. Keep each piece in its own pouch or compartment. Metal against metal scratches, and chains tangle.
• Wipe it down. A quick pass with a soft dry cloth after wearing removes skin oils and keeps shine intact.

Cleaning sterling silver

Wash gently in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, work a soft-bristled brush into any crevices, rinse and pat completely dry. For tarnish, use a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth. Sterling silver naturally tarnishes over time — that is a property of the metal, not a fault, and it polishes right off.

Cleaning gold plated pieces

A plated finish is a thin layer of gold over a base metal, so treat it gently. Warm water and mild soap only, then dry thoroughly. Do not use abrasive polishes, ultrasonic cleaners or silver dips on plated pieces — they wear the gold layer away. Take plated pieces off before swimming, showering or working out, and put them on last when getting ready.

What to avoid

Perfume, sunscreen, hairspray, cleaning products, chlorine and hand sanitiser all contain chemicals that accelerate wear on plated and silver finishes. Apply them first, let them dry, then put your jewellery on.
